Same Difference Festival | August 2026: A Youth Led Event

Wolverhampton CEP | West Park | August 2026

Same Difference Festival 2026 was one of the most vibrant, youth‑driven celebrations Wolverhampton has ever hosted. Delivered by Wolverhampton CEP, the festival transformed West Park into a day‑long explosion of movement, music, performance, and creativity — all shaped by young people from across the city.

This year, I returned with my long‑time collaborator Vicky Crowther, to deliver two upgraded family workshops inspired by movement, rhythm, and pulse — themes chosen to reflect the festival’s focus on youth voice, energy, and expression.

With hundreds of visitors passing through the park and a constant flow of families visiting our tent, the day was full of colour, laughter, and creative momentum.

Workshop Offer for 2026

For this year’s festival, the CEP team asked us to level up our workshop offer — bigger, bolder, more sustainable, and more connected to the festival’s movement theme.

We delivered two free-to-access workshops:

• Reusable Flip‑Lid Water Bottles — decorated with vinyl sticker designs inspired by rhythm and pulse

  
  

• Waterproof Drawstring Backpacks — customised with movement‑themed motifs and festival colours

Both activities were designed to be:

• Sustainable

• Practical

• Festival‑ready

• Easy to carry around the park

• Suitable for all ages

And both were shaped by the festival’s ethos: creativity in motion.

Rhythm‑Inspired Reusable Water Bottles

The first workshop invited families to customise reusable flip‑lid water bottles — part of the festival’s sustainability upgrade. The bottles were designed to help reduce single‑use plastics at the event, and families loved having something practical they could use immediately.

Children and young people:

• Chose from a set of movement‑themed vinyl sticker motifs

• Layered shapes inspired by rhythm, pulse, and dance

• Added symbols, and colour accents

• Built designs that wrapped around the bottle in flowing, kinetic patterns

The vinyl stickers were designed and cut in festival colours, making the activity accessible for all ages. The results were bold, expressive, and instantly recognisable around the park — a wave of customised bottles carried by families throughout the day.

Waterproof Drawstring Backpacks

The second workshop focused on waterproof drawstring backpacks, upgraded from previous year’s tote bags to be more durable, more colourful, and more connected to the festival’s identity.

Children and young people:

• Selected a backpack colour

• Chose from a set of movement‑inspired stencil designs

• Chose between acrylic paint pens and fabric swatches

• Added festival motifs, words, and patterns

• Built layered compositions that reflected dance, flow, and energy

The backpacks became wearable canvases — practical, expressive, and perfect for carrying snacks, water bottles, and festival merch. Many children wore their backpacks immediately, and we saw them all over West Park throughout the day.

The Atmosphere at West Park

West Park was alive from the moment the gates opened:

• Youth performances across three stages

• Colourscape’s immersive walk‑through installation

• Circus workshops

• Dance and movement sessions

• Food stalls

• Aerial displays from Sky Pixies

• SEND‑friendly quiet hour

• Families exploring every corner of the festival

Our workshop tent sat within the creative zone, buzzing all day with families decorating bottles and backpacks. The movement theme echoed everywhere — in dance, in music, in the flow of people, and in the designs children created.

The festival felt joyful, inclusive, and full of pride — a celebration shaped by young people and embraced by the whole community.

Same Difference is a large festival — multiple performance spaces, youth‑led acts, Colourscape, circus workshops, and thousands of visitors.

Delivering workshops at this scale simply wouldn’t be possible without Vicky, whose organisation, humour, and calm presence keep the tent flowing smoothly even during peak rushes.

We’ve delivered countless workshops together, and this festival is always a highlight — a reminder of how well we work as a team and how much joy comes from shared creative energy.

Reflections

Delivering workshops for Same Difference Festival 2026 was a joy. The upgraded offer allowed families to make something practical, expressive, and connected to the festival’s identity. The movement theme brought a fresh creative energy, and seeing children carry their customised bottles and backpacks around the park was a highlight of the day.

Same Difference is a festival built on youth voice, creativity, and community — and I’m proud to have contributed to it for the last 5 years.
